One moment that deeply shaped my business philosophy happened when my oldest was a toddler. We stopped at a donut shop for a special treat, and after picking out our donuts, I realized at the register that they didn’t accept debit cards. I was so embarrassed, but the woman behind the counter smiled and said, “It’s fine, just come back with cash later.” Her trust not only saved our special donut date, it stayed with me as an example of what it means to assume the best in people.

That feeling of being trusted meant everything. And I’ve never forgotten how much it contrasted with other times I’ve felt like businesses were spending an excessive amount of energy anticipating only the ways customers could take advantage of them.
